It rains. But Kartik Fine Arts' fest has a pleasant opening

Kartik Fine Arts kept its date with the rain. More often that not it rains on the opening day of this sabha's festival for December.

It did this morning, at about 5 a.m. Today was the day of the Chennai Marathon. Even as the rain fell and the city snuggled on a  Sunday, the first of the runners started on the full marathon from the start point in Indira Nagar, south Chennai. At 7 a.m., some 6000 runners kicked off on the 10km run open to all.

A couple of hours, the curtains went up on Kartik's Fest. By then, the rains had stopped and the weather, pleasant. And the event conducted in a businesslike manner.

There were awards for vocalist Nisha Rajagopal and dancer Uma Sathyanarayan, besides Y Prabhu of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and vocalist Vasudha Ravi.

The big applause was reserved for a politician, one of the chief guests. A legislator, Pala Karuppiah, also a film producer and author of a few books his saucy speech, including a tribute to Vyjayanthimala Bali who was in the audience this Sunday morning.
